Theatre
Quiddity Theatre is a collaboration between Hilary
Elliott and John Britton. Since 1993 they
have produced more than ten original works as well as numerous community
projects. Quiddity Theatre’s work is characterised by a commitment
to quality, innovation, experimentation and accessibility. The works combine
text, choreography, strong character and improvisation, frequently incorporating
live music.
Quiddity Theatre - a collaboration between Hilary Elliott and John Britton
- is committed to excellent, innovative hybrid physical theatre which
combines dance and poetic, original text in a unique and accessible performance
aesthetic. The work is developed through improvisation and choreography,
frequently incorporates live music and is generally text-driven. Quiddity
Theatre is committed to exploring new and experimental forms of performance,
with a particular emphasis on ensemble, improvisation and the roots of
creativity. They make Total Theatre, sometimes text based, sometimes Totally
Improvised in a form of theatrical Spontaneous Combustion. They are committed
to sharing their work through performance, workshops, residencies, Summer
Schools, and other forms of Professional Development.

| Hilary
Elliott –
artistic director of quiddity theatre/performer
Hilary
is an actor, dancer, director and choreographer. She trained in
Canberra before winning a scholarship to complete an MA in Theatre
at Leeds University in the UK. After working extensively overseas,
she returned to Australia in 1997. She has performed with John Britton
in Charred Vision, Diving For Pearls, The
18:12 To Tashkent (UK); Adam’s Apple, Time
& Tide and Fleshtones (Melbourne). She has performed
in The Waltz (West Yorkshire Playhouse) and New Beginnings
(Yorkshire Dance Centre); Carnival Of the Animals (Monash
New Orchestra) and Is AnyBody Home? (Weave Movement Theatre).
In 2002 she recorded Fleshtones for ABC radio. In 2003
she has choreographed a project for La Trobe University and worked
as Artistic Director of La Trobe’s Shortworks Festival. She
is currently working for The Royal Women’s Hospital and at
Footscray Community Arts Centre. |
John
Britton –
artistic director of quiddity theatre/scriptwriter/performer
John Britton has been
writing and performing original performance works since completing
his MA in 1988. His writing credits include Fleshtones,
Adam’s Apple, The River Project, Time
& Tide, Cyclops Alley (Quiddity Theatre) Into
The Storm (West Yorkshire Playhouse), This Island Mine
& The Alcohol Show (Monash Student Theatre), The 18.12
To Tashkent & The Path (Aztec Theatre) and contributions
to the text of 98.4% DNA – Being Human (Desoxy Theatre).
He has recently completed Standards #1- 4 a quartet of
radio plays. He has worked as a touring story-teller, an ensemble
physical theatre performer and performer in his own work and with
companies such as Eclectic Pelican, The Blahs (UK) Yorkshire Television
and, most recently, ABC Radio. He has recently returned from three
months teaching and performing in the UK and in 2003 has directed
The Little Sweep for OzOpera, Dirty Laundry at
The Carlton Courthouse as well as working as a script writer with
Yarra Valley Youth Theatre and teaching at the National Institute
Of Circus Arts. |
