Quiddity Theatre

Welcome to Quiddity Theatre.

Quiddity Theatre is a collaboration between Hilary Elliott and John Britton.

We’ve done many forms of work since 1993 - physical performance, dance theatre, text, storytelling, even radio. Nowadays we focus on improvised performances and on running training workshops.

We’d love you to explore our history, ideas and current work through the various pages of this website.

If you’d like to get in touch with us, please contact either John Britton or Hilary Elliott or Quiddity Theatre.

LATEST NEWS

In April John ran a residential workshop at the Au Brana Cultural Centre, France, combining psychophysical training, ensemble development and an exploration of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’. It was a fantastic ten days with thirteen performers from Canada, Turkey, Greece, Australia, The United Kingdom and France. John was assisted by Eilon Morris. You can find out more information about the workshop here and can see a few photographs here. Currently he is planning one or two residential workshops for the first half of 2010.

As the British summer confuses everyone by being sunny, both of us are concentrating on our work at Huddersfield University. Hilary is spending time researching for her PhD and John running the intensive training programme that underpins the MA in Ensemble Physical Theatre that he runs. There is an article about John’s ensemble training in the Spring 2009 edition of ‘Total Theatre’ magazine.

Together John and Hilary ran a research project based round their performance work in April in Huddersfield and are planning further Spontaneous Combustions later in the year. Current plans include a sequence of four weekly performance in the Autumn, during which we will probably work separately rather than as a duet, as we continue to explore new strands of improvisatory work.

John recently visited New York University to attend a panel on Grotowski’s work in the Americas and to join in with a workshop run by Mexican Practitioner Nicolas Nunez. Later in the year he will be returning to the Swedish Ballet Academy for a week.
