Cyclops
Alley John Britton A
collaboration between Quiddity Theatre and internationally renowned composer/sound
artist Cyclops Alley is an experimental fusion of sound, narrative and physical performance. It comprises a densely poetic text tracing the journey of a godlike narrator down the back alleys of a nameless city. It is a story of private evil and public good in which wealth is a shield between actions and responsibility. When first performed at Melbourne’s La Mama theatre Cyclops Alley was met by passionate responses – some were confronted by its content, others found it profoundly moving and redemptive. Critics compared the writing to that of T S Eliot and Allan Ginsburg, another critic wrote of the work as “a definite keystone for modern theatre” Cylcops Alley is a short and intense piece, lasting only 35 minutes and is available in two forms – as a chamber piece for musician, narrator and solo dancer, or as a piece for narrator, composer and ensemble of five physical performers. It
is suitable for small venues where the audience and performers are in
direct and intimate relationship with one another. As a cross-art form
piece it is as suitable to contemporary music festivals and literature
festivals as it is to theatre & dance based programmes.
